Catalonia prepares for 2027 municipal elections amid social unrest

As the 2027 municipal elections approach in Catalonia and the wider Catalan-speaking territories, political and social tensions are rising. Key issues driving public indignation include the housing crisis, where a significant shortfall in promised construction has led to rising rents and difficulty for young people to find affordable accommodation. Additionally, agricultural workers are facing economic pressure due to free market competition, where production costs often exceed market prices.

The political landscape is expected to be a contest between various blocs. In the Valencian Country and the Islands, elections are viewed as a test for the regional governments led by the PP and VOX. Meanwhile, the independentist left, specifically through the CUP, is looking to promote a rupture-based municipalism to expand revolutionary independentist and popular movements against both the traditional right and the progressive bloc led by the Spanish government.
