Catalonia President Salvador Illa Defends Government Over Forest Fire and Warns of Regression Under PP
Catalonia’s president, Salvador Illa, said there is “a real risk of involution” if the People’s Party (PP) comes to power, warning that more conservative and extremist governments would worsen conditions for workers and their families. He cited the historical role of the working class in Spain’s democratic transition and urged the preservation of strong unions and progressive policies.
Illa also denied any government negligence in the recent Gavarres forest fire, stating that the blaze started after a subcontracted worker used a radial tool in breach of safety rules. He emphasized that the administration acted transparently, that the cause has been identified, and that the investigation will continue under judicial authority. Illa warned that a heat wave will persist in the coming weeks, urging caution from citizens.
