Catalonia prison escape attempts lead to arrests and security crackdown

A prisoner serving a 10‑year sentence for homicide escaped from the Centre Penitenciari de Quatre Camins on 22 July during a scheduled outing. He was located and detained on 30 July in Portbou, near the French border, by the National Police and transferred to the nearby Centre Penitenciari de Puig de les Basses.

In a separate incident at the Centre Penitenciari Ponent, a 28‑year‑old inmate convicted of murder, drug trafficking and robbery brandished homemade knives, stabbed another inmate and climbed onto a roof for about half an hour, prompting the activation of an escape protocol. He voluntarily descended after staff offered water and medication and was subsequently isolated.

Both events highlight ongoing security challenges within Catalonia’s prison system.
