Catalonia records record 120 million euros in charitable will donations
Charitable donations through solidarity wills in Catalonia reached a record 120 million euros last year, marking a 113% increase compared to the previous year. According to data from the Notarial College of Catalonia, while the total number of solidarity legacies decreased slightly to 192, the economic value of these donations rose significantly.
Catalonia accounts for 17% of the 1,113 solidarity wills registered across Spain, but represents 35% of the total monetary value in the country. Of the 192 legacies, 114 were directed toward secular non-profit organizations, while the remainder went to religious entities.
The profile of donors includes individuals without direct descendants as well as those with families who choose to reserve a portion of their estate for social causes. Interest in these legacies has grown substantially, with information requests in Catalonia increasing by 397% between 2021 and 2025. Organizations such as Doctors Without Borders reported a 16% increase in such legacies, with some donors citing the situation in Gaza as a motivation for their contribution.
