Catalonia shared housing market sees rise in female tenants and professionals

A report by Fotocasa Research titled ‘Perfil de les persones que comparteixen habitatge’, based on data from the first half of 2026, highlights shifting demographics in the shared housing market in Catalonia.

Shared housing is no longer exclusive to students; it has become a common strategy for working professionals facing high costs of living. In Catalonia, shared housing requests represent 13% of the total demand in Spain, making it the third most pressured market after Andalusia and the Community of Madrid.

A significant gender shift has occurred: women now make up 53% of the shared housing population, reversing a 2024 trend where men represented 55% of demand. The average age of residents remains 31, with those under 35 accounting for nearly 75% of the market. The largest single demographic is the 18-to-24 age group, comprising 44% of the total.
