Catalonia terrorist attack victims still awaiting compensation nine years later
Nine years after the August 2017 terrorist attacks in La Rambla, Barcelona, and Cambrils, more than one third of the recognized victims have yet to receive compensation. The jihadist attacks resulted in at least 368 victims, including 16 fatalities, according to a 2021 ruling by the Audiencia Nacional.
Data from the Spanish Government indicates that while the Ministry of the Interior has compensated 232 individuals, 136 victims remain unpaid. Reasons for the delay include difficulties in locating victims, unsubmitted claims, or a lack of awareness regarding eligible benefits. Because the attacks occurred in major tourist areas, many survivors reside in different countries.
The Directorate General for Support to Victims of Terrorism stated it has attempted to contact the affected individuals to inform them of their rights. However, critics such as Robert Manrique, a member of the former Unit for the Attention and Assessment of Victims of Terrorism, suggest that many remain unpaid because they have not successfully established contact with the administration.
