Catalonia to launch digital twin for 326 km of roads
The Generalitat de Catalunya is launching a technological innovation project to create a digital twin of 326 kilometers of roads and highways. This initiative, funded through a Public Innovation Purchase with an investment of approximately 7.1 million euros, aims to transform road management from a reactive to a predictive model.
The digital twin will provide a virtual representation of the road network, including the Ronda de Dalt and the C-31 and C-32 highways. By integrating real-time data from cameras, radars, variable message panels, and environmental sensors, the system will allow authorities to analyze traffic evolution, detect needs, and anticipate incidents before they escalate.
The project is expected to take 36 months to develop. The network being modeled is a critical artery for Catalan mobility, handling over 800,000 vehicles daily, of which approximately 11% are heavy vehicles.
