Catalonia floods trigger 75 million euro aid package and rail service disruption
Severe flooding and torrential rains have caused widespread damage across Catalonia, leading to fatalities and significant infrastructure disruption. In the Maresme region, record rainfall was recorded, including 288 liters per square meter in Vilassar de Mar. The storms have caused flooding in homes, businesses, and public facilities, particularly in areas like La Pineda and Granollers.
In response to the crisis, Catalan President Salvador Illa announced an urgent aid package of 75 million euros. This includes 20 million euros for municipal infrastructure repairs, 5 million euros for businesses and the self-employed, and 50 million euros to provide immediate liquidity to affected parties. The regional government is also seeking disaster zone status for several municipalities from the central government.
The weather has also severely impacted the rail network. The Semaf union of train drivers has refused to operate Rodalies services, citing concerns that the infrastructure's safety cannot be guaranteed following the storms. This labor dispute has caused widespread disruption to commuter services across the region, with Renfe advising passengers to seek alternative transportation.
