Spain emergency services activate alerts for torrential rain and storms

Authorities in Spain have activated emergency protocols, including the INUNCAT plan in Catalonia and ES-Alert notifications, due to forecasts of intense and locally torrential rainfall across several regions.

In Catalonia, Civil Protection and Meteocat have issued high-level warnings for several counties, including Maresme, Vallès Oriental, La Selva, and Barcelonès. Heavy downpours, potentially accompanied by storms and hail, are expected to cause significant accumulations, with some areas facing risks of over 40 mm of rain in 30 minutes and up to 100 liters per square meter in certain coastal and central zones.

In the Valencian Community, the arrival of storm Adam has triggered red alerts in areas such as La Safor and Marina Alta, with AEMET warning of extraordinary risks and potential accumulations of up to 300 liters per square meter within 24 hours. Local authorities in Valencia have responded by closing public parks, gardens, and libraries, and canceling several scheduled events.

Emergency services urge the public to limit unnecessary travel, avoid riverbeds, ravines, and flood-prone areas, and refrain from driving through standing water. In Cerdanyola del Vallès, the KM0 Festival has been postponed due to the weather forecast.
