Catalonia's AP‑7 highway records surge in fatal road accidents

The Catalan Traffic Service reported that 21 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents on Catalonia’s roads between 1 January and 31 May 2026, a figure that matches the worst years of 2019 and 2025. Most deaths involved solo falls on motorways such as the AP‑7, with victims typically men over 45 and accidents occurring in the late‑afternoon. The deaths account for 40 % of all traffic fatalities in the region during the first five months, prompting the launch of a prevention campaign titled “Per evitar accidents, anticipa’t” that will emphasise rider awareness, higher monitoring with drones and helicopters, and targeted signage on hazardous sections.

In a separate incident on the same highway, a truck driver was killed in a head‑on collision with another heavy vehicle near Riudellots de la Selva. The crash caused the closure of the northbound lane of the AP‑7 and diverted traffic via Maçanet de la Selva, with one other person injured and taken to Hospital Josep Trueta in Girona. Both events underline growing safety concerns on the AP‑7 corridor during the warmer months.
