Catalonia records 24 drownings this summer, with Costa Daurada accounting for most deaths

Since the official start of the bathing season on 15 June, 24 people have died from drowning in Catalonia: 13 on beaches, eight in pools and three in inland waters. Ten of the beach deaths occurred on the Costa Daurada, two on the Costa Brava and one on the Costa Central. Injuries from drowning rose sharply, up 31 % on beaches and 80 % in pools compared with the same period last year.

The Generalitat de Catalunya has intensified its prevention campaign, launching the “A l’aigua, fem equip” programme and reinforcing recommendations from Protecció Civil: swim with supervision, use patrolled zones, respect red‑flag warnings, avoid alcohol before entering the water and keep children under constant adult watch.

The surge in fatalities and injuries, especially among older adults, prompted officials to urge the public to adopt heightened safety measures throughout the summer.
