Catalonia's live‑music boom pushes total industry turnover to record €265 million
The 25‑year review of Catalonia’s music sector shows total industry revenue reaching a record €265 million, a 74 % rise from €152 million in 2001. The surge is driven by live music, whose turnover jumped from €70 million to €244 million – a 250 % increase – and by festivals that expanded audience numbers seven‑fold to 3.7 million, lifting total spectators from 4 million to 24 million (‑441 %). Concerts doubled from 15 000 to 32 000 per year, and royalties from live events rose from €5 million to €14 million. Public funding for music rose 2.5 times to €43 million, while listening to Catalan‑language music grew from 10 % to 43 % of total consumption. In contrast, the recorded‑music segment fell sharply, with disc‑label revenue collapsing from €82 million to €21 million (‑74 %) and sales of physical and digital recordings dropping 78 %. Nevertheless, the number of Catalan releases more than tripled, from 446 to 1 230 titles. The sector notes challenges: concert halls lost 4 % of audiences despite offering 13 % more shows, and younger audiences favor festivals over smaller venues.
