Catamarca approves public register of sexual offenders to protect children
The provincial Chamber of Deputies in Catamarca gave medium sanction to a bill that would create a Public Register of Persons Convicted of Sexual Crimes. The proposal, unified from initiatives by deputies Natalia Saseta and Exequiel Moreno, places the register under the jurisdiction of the provincial Judiciary and the Court of Justice. It would require individuals seeking certain positions—particularly those involving care or education of minors—to present a certificate confirming no convictions for sexual offenses, a requirement that does not currently exist.
Deputy Saseta emphasized that the measure is intended to safeguard children, adolescents, people with disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable groups, urging support from all political blocks. According to data cited by Deputy Moreno, in 2025 the Provincial Penal Chamber received 139 cases, of which 111 (around 80 %) involved sexual integrity offences. The bill now proceeds to the next stage of legislative processing before it can become law.
