Catamarca bullying case sparks political tension and legal scrutiny
A severe case of cyberbullying and the non-consensual distribution of private material involving a 17-year-old student in Catamarca has triggered national outcry and political controversy in Argentina. The victim's legal counsel, Roberto Casorla Yalet, has denounced a lack of institutional support and alleged provincial political pressure aimed at mitigating the media impact of the case.
In response to the incident, legal experts are considering escalating the matter to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to ensure judicial independence and the protection of fundamental rights. Meanwhile, provincial legislators have criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to provide adequate explanations regarding the institutional response to the harassment.
The case has also prompted calls for legislative reform. The provincial Ombudsman, Dalmacio Mera, is leading a project before the National Congress, supported by over 400 civil associations, to regulate digital violence and address the impact of social media algorithms on the mental health of minors.
