Catamarca establishes mining hub amid local economic and environmental concerns

The mining industry in Catamarca, Argentina, is driving significant economic and environmental shifts. The provincial government and the municipality of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca have agreed to establish a ‘Mining Hub’ in the capital. This center will concentrate administrative, logistical, and operational activities, including offices for the Ministry of Mining and CAMYEN S.E.

However, the expansion faces local challenges. Residents in western departments report a rising cost of living, as mining salaries create local inflation for food, rent, and fuel. There are also concerns regarding the deterioration of road infrastructure due to heavy machinery and the impact on traditional agricultural and livestock activities.

Environmental issues have also surfaced, with reports of air quality degradation. High winds and mining operations are causing the dispersion of mineral dust (PM10 and PM2.5) into nearby communities, affecting respiratory health and grazing lands. Critics also point to a lack of real-time air quality monitoring stations in the region.
