Paraguay faces fiscal deficit and economic pressure

Paraguay's annual fiscal deficit reached 3% of GDP by the end of September 2026, totaling approximately 12 trillion Guaraníes, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. While total revenues grew by 1.6% year-on-year, government expenditures rose by 11.2%, creating a significant gap that limits the state's capacity for public investment.

Economic sectors are expressing concern over the exchange rate. Ten major unions representing production, commerce, industry, and logistics have requested a meeting with the Ministry of Economy and Finance to discuss the impact of the US dollar's depreciation on their supply chains. The groups noted that currency fluctuations also affect state revenue projections.

In the legislative sphere, the Lower House approved an information request directed at the Ministry of Public Works and Communications. The request seeks detailed technical and administrative documentation regarding construction projects near the Pedrozo pedestrian viaduct following a fatal accident. The inquiry aims to clarify inconsistencies in environmental licenses and land compensation records.
