Catamarca observes holiday marking 22nd anniversary of 2004 earthquake

The Argentine province of Catamarca is observing a provincial holiday on Monday to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the 2004 earthquake. The seismic event, which occurred on September 7, 2004, measured 6.5 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in the Sierra de Ambato. The tremor was felt across 14 Argentine provinces and caused significant structural damage to over 1,300 homes and various monuments, including the Basilica Cathedral.

Despite the intensity of the earthquake, no fatalities were recorded, a fact local residents attribute to the protection of the Virgen del Valle. This perceived miracle led to the establishment of the 'Día del Milagro' (Day of the Miracle). Under Provincial Law No. 5525, September 7 is recognized as an unmovable provincial holiday to honor this history and the religious devotion that followed the event.
