Catamarca faces economic tension amid mining growth and rising debt

The province of Catamarca is facing a complex economic landscape characterized by a tension between mining sector growth and local financial instability. While Governor Raúl Jalil has highlighted a 32% increase in mining employment since 2023, local indicators suggest significant hardship. Family bank delinquency rates have doubled to 12% in the last year, with local businesses reporting that consumers have exhausted credit limits to cover basic necessities like food and utilities.

In response to rising debt, the provincial government is evaluating a plan to refinance debts for workers and families through Capresca and Banco Nación. A key component of this proposal involves mandatory financial education courses, potentially developed in collaboration with the National University of Catamarca. The Unión Comercial de Catamarca has expressed support for this initiative, offering to host training sessions to help citizens better understand credit conditions.

Simultaneously, the mining sector faces scrutiny. The labor union AOMA recently halted operations at a lithium plant in Fiambalá after discovering substandard equipment, raising questions regarding the effectiveness of provincial mining and labor inspections.
