Catamarca police seize 6 tonnes of coca leaf and bust organized drug network
Police from the Dirección de Drogas Peligrosas carried out coordinated raids in the Catamarca towns of Recreo, Santa María and Chumbicha. The operations resulted in the seizure of about 6,245 kg of coca leaf, more than three kilograms of compacted cocaine, hundreds of grams of marijuana, synthetic drug precursors, vehicles and equipment such as precision scales, a digital balance, cell phones and a safe. Arrests included a 27‑year‑old man, two teenagers and several other suspects, with all seized material handed over to the federal court.
Investigators uncovered an organized trafficking structure operating in the central valley of the province and linked to suppliers in the neighboring province of Salta. The bust highlights the expanding reach of sophisticated narcotics networks in northern Argentina, raising concerns about the associated social impact and the need for stronger security and prevention policies.
