Mount Etna eruptions cause repeated closures at Catania airport

Mount Etna's volcanic activity has caused repeated closures and flight suspensions at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily. The eruptive activity, characterized by ash clouds reaching heights of approximately four kilometers, has forced the airport to cycle through multiple periods of suspension and reopening. The Etna Observatory (INGV) has maintained a red alert level due to the ongoing risk posed by volcanic ash to jet engines.

These disruptions have significantly impacted regional travel and the economy. The Sicilian Region has intervened to assist thousands of stranded passengers by organizing over 5,300 additional train seats and more than 100 buses to facilitate transfers to alternative airports in Palermo, Trapani, and Comiso. Despite these efforts, travelers have reported significant delays and difficulties in receiving timely information from airlines.

The economic consequences are substantial; research indicates that summer closures related to volcanic activity have caused approximately 600 million euros in damage to the Sicilian tourism sector. In response to the recurring crisis, political figures and labor unions are calling for structural changes. Proposals include strengthening Comiso airport as a strategic alternative to Catania, creating a unified regional airport management system, and filing inquiries with the European Commission to ensure passenger rights are protected during such emergencies.
