Catania and Comiso airports face legal challenges over SAC privatization

On 30 June 2026 a press conference was held in Catania by the Committee for the Defense and Development of Comiso Airport. Representatives of local associations and institutional officials denounced a lack of transparency in the ongoing privatization of SAC, the company that manages Catania and Comiso airports, and warned that the process could marginalise the Comiso facility in favour of the larger Catania hub.

The committee presented formal complaints that have already been filed with several public authorities, including the public prosecutor’s offices, the Court of Auditors and ANAC (the National Anti‑Corruption Authority). The documents outline procedural irregularities in the sale of SAC shares, the role of public shareholders, and the consequences of the prolonged administration of the Sicily South‑East Chamber of Commerce for jobs and regional development.

Committee members called for an immediate, temporary suspension of any further sale of SAC shares until robust safeguards are put in place. They urged central and regional ministries to intervene to ensure that the airports remain under efficient, transparent, and territorially balanced management, protecting the interests of the provinces of Ragusa, Siracusa and the wider southeast of Sicily.
