Catania and Siracusa anti-mafia operation targets Nardo and Santapaola-Ercolano clans
A major anti-mafia operation in the provinces of Catania and Siracusa has resulted in 25 precautionary measures against individuals suspected of mafia association, drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering. The investigation, coordinated by the Catania District Prosecutor's Office, targeted the Nardo clan of Lentini, which is reportedly historically affiliated with the Santapaola-Ercolano family.
Authorities identified that the Nardo clan exerted extortionate pressure on the agri-food sector, particularly affecting the transport and marketing of citrus fruits, as well as companies involved in public works contracts. Additionally, a second criminal group linked to the Santapaola-Ercolano family was identified as being involved in the international trafficking of cocaine, marijuana, and hashish, with imports originating from Spain.
During the operation, which involved over 250 military personnel, five individuals were arrested in flagrante. Police seized weapons, ammunition, and approximately 2 kg of drugs. Furthermore, the Catania judge ordered the preventive seizure of assets, including companies, real estate, and financial holdings, with a total estimated value of 5.5 million euros.
