Catania Functional Urban Area assigned 123 million euros in EU funds
The Sicilian Regional Government has approved a plan to assign management and control functions to the Catania Functional Urban Area (Fua). This designation allows the urban authority, which includes Catania and 21 surrounding municipalities, to act as an intermediate body for implementing territorial strategies under the FESR Sicilia 21-27 program.
Over 90 projects have been identified for the Catania area, representing a total investment of 123 million euros. The projects cover an area of more than 650 square kilometers and impact approximately 690,000 residents. Key focus areas include energy efficiency for public buildings and lighting networks, renewable energy, urban regeneration, mobility (including cycling and pedestrian paths), seismic upgrading, and the digitalization of administrative capacities.
This move follows similar recognitions for the Ragusa, Siracusa, and Central Sicily FUAs. The next steps involve signing a convention between regional departments and the new intermediate body, followed by a program agreement with the regional president to unlock the first advance of funds.
