Catania Law Enforcement Steps Up Patrols as Mayor Chases Thief
Carabinieri units in Catania carried out a coordinated territorial control operation, checking 57 individuals and 31 vehicles in central areas. The checks resulted in fines totalling €15,197 and the administrative seizure of six vehicles. Officers cited violations such as riding without helmets, driving without insurance or a licence, failure to renew vehicle inspections, and the use of electronic devices while driving. Two repeat offenders were arrested for illegal parking and evading a ban from the city centre.
Mayor Enrico Trantino also took part in a direct security action, pursuing a suspected bag‑snatcher on his scooter through the historic centre. He followed the suspect from the Quattro Canti area into narrow back‑streets before the chase was abandoned for safety reasons. The thief escaped, but the mayor affirmed that police would continue the investigation.
