Catania opens project deadline; Mercogliano youth forum remains stalled

The municipality of Catania has set a July 14 deadline for residents and local groups to submit proposals for the Democrazia Partecipata 2026 program. The initiative, funded with about €200,000 (2 % of regional transfers), invites ideas in areas such as environment, urban regeneration, cultural activities, public works and employment. Submissions must be made through the city’s digital portal using SPID or CIE credentials and are open to anyone aged 16 or older and to local associations, schools, foundations and religious entities.

In the town of Mercogliano, the Youth Forum has been inactive since its mandate expired in September 2025. The municipal administration has not yet published the call for applications required to renew the forum, leaving local young people without a formal channel for civic participation. Community leaders and former forum members have urged the authorities to issue the tender and hold elections without further delay, stressing the forum’s role as a key instrument for youth representation and civic engagement.
