Catania police seize 200kg of illegal fireworks

Police in Catania have seized over 200 kilograms of illegal fireworks intended for an unauthorized pyrotechnic display in the San Cristoforo district. The operation was initiated after off-duty officers observed suspicious activity on a private terrace during religious celebrations for Santa Maria della Salette.

Upon investigation, officers from the General Prevention and Public Rescue Office discovered a pyrotechnic installation connected to electric ignition units. Specialized bomb disposal experts were called to the scene to secure the area, noting that the material posed a significant risk to public safety, particularly given the crowds gathered for the festivities.

Authorities seized 63 products, some of which were modified and did not match recognized models. Specifically, holes had been drilled into the batteries to allow for direct application of electric igniters, a modification that increased the danger of the devices. Two men, aged 32 and 56, were found to be operating without the required professional licenses or legal authorizations. They have been reported to judicial authorities for charges including the illegal manufacture or trade of explosives and the unauthorized practice of a profession.
