Catania region faces infrastructure and heritage developments
In Sicily, restoration works have officially commenced at the Nunziatella archaeological site in Mascali. Funded by the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage, the project aims to protect one of eastern Sicily’s oldest paleo-Christian basilicas. The plan includes installing high-tech coverings to shield excavations from weather and partially removing a perimeter wall to better integrate the site with the urban landscape and increase tourism.
Separately, Nello Musumeci, the Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies, has revisited the debate regarding Catania’s Fontanarossa Airport. During a presentation on natural risk management, Musumeci expressed hope that the airport might eventually be relocated to an inland area to mitigate the recurring operational disruptions caused by volcanic ash from Mount Etna.
In Sardinia, plans are underway to relaunch the International Trade Fair of Sardinia in May 2027. After a decade of inactivity, the event aims to transition from its traditional model to a specialized four-day exhibition focusing on Sardinian agri-food excellence, craftsmanship, and gastronomy, while maintaining its cultural roots.
