Catania region faces rising security and infrastructure concerns

Security concerns are rising in the Catania area following reports of infrastructure damage and criminal activity. In the Etna hinterland, dangling telephone cables have been reported on several provincial roads, including Via Andrea Caponnetto in Motta Sant’Anastasia. It remains unclear if these cables were stolen for copper or are being decommissioned by operators, but they pose risks to traffic and potential connectivity disruptions for residents and businesses.

In the city of Catania, business owners and the CNA association are denouncing a wave of thefts, vandalism, and harassment in the Corso Sicilia area. Local entrepreneurs report broken car windows, theft, and the presence of illegal parking attendants. The CNA Catania has expressed concern that these security issues are driving people away from commercial streets in the evenings, negatively impacting the local economy and the safety of students and professionals.
