Catania restores seven public fountains as part of urban renewal plan

The Mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, has announced the restoration of seven public fountains across the city, including locations in Villa Bellini, Boschetto della Plaia, Piazza Santa Maria di Gesù, Tondo Gioeni, Piazza Europa, Piazza Verga, and Piazza Cavour.

Future maintenance projects are planned for Piazza Eroi d’Ungheria, Villa Pacini, and Piazza Borsellino. A significant restoration project for the Ratto di Proserpina fountain is estimated to cost approximately 600,000 euros to repair heavily damaged stone elements. Additionally, road redevelopment works are set to begin on Via Galermo.

The initiative has sparked local debate regarding urban decorum and municipal priorities. While some residents welcome the restoration of city landmarks, others have called for more urgent attention to issues such as road conditions, waste management, and neighborhood decay. Trantino acknowledged the financial difficulties facing local administrations but stated that budget constraints would not serve as an excuse for inaction.
