Catania strengthens maritime safety with ordnance disposal and cruise‑ship security plan

Coordinated by the Prefecture of Catania, navy divers from the S.D.A.I. unit safely defused and detonated a World War II bomb recovered from the waters near Ognina, about 15 metres deep. The operation, carried out without incident, restored normal navigation in the area after a temporary ban on anchoring and sub‑aquatic activities.

During the summer season through October, the State Police, the municipality of Catania and the Catania Port Authority renewed their joint security programme for arriving cruise‑ship passengers. The plan deploys police, border guards, port officials and volunteer groups to manage crowds, ensure public order and maintain safe traffic in and around the port, with meetings held at the Catania police headquarters to coordinate efforts.
