Catanzaro former councilor calls for referendum on pedestrian zone
Former Catanzaro City Councilor Pino Murica has criticized Mayor Nicola Fiorita, claiming the administration has lost its popular mandate and is operating through a mixed group of political factions. Murica specifically targeted a new ordinance establishing a permanent pedestrian zone in the historic center starting September 15.
Murica and local food industry operators from the FCS association argue that closing Corso Mazzini without functional funicular services, restricted access to Viale dei Normanni, and unusable parking at Sant’Agata will turn the city center into a “desert.” Murica has called for a public referendum to allow citizens to decide on the matter.
