Catanzaro Mayor launches anti‑intimidation art staircase in San Leonardo

The municipality of Catanzaro, led by Mayor Nicola Fiorita, inaugurated a public‑art staircase in the San Leonardo neighbourhood. The work, titled “Libera dalle catene”, was created by local artist Enrico Focarelli Barone, known as Frelly, and financed in part by the Fondo per la legalità.

The installation features a balloon rising above a broken chain, symbolising freedom from the threats and omertà that target local administrators and citizens who fight organized crime. Collaborating organisations such as the anti‑mafia association Libera and Avviso Pubblico helped bring the project to life, aiming to encourage transparency, civic courage and community engagement among the neighbourhood’s youth.

Mayor Fiorita highlighted the piece as a visual reminder that public servants should be able to work “head held high, without fear or intimidation”.
