Catanzaro political landscape faces judicial inquiry and coalition infighting

Political and legal tensions are escalating in Catanzaro, Calabria, involving corruption investigations and internal coalition conflicts. A new judicial inquiry, code-named ‘Basso Profilo 2’, has resurfaced concerns regarding the management of maritime state property and floating piers. The investigation examines a 2016 public tender process that allegedly became a stage for ‘massomafiosa’ (mafia-masonry) interests, involving figures such as Filippo Mancuso, the current Vice President of the Calabria Regional Council.

Simultaneously, the local center-right coalition faces internal fragmentation ahead of upcoming administrative elections. Tensions have emerged between Forza Italia member Sergio Costanzo and Lega leader Filippo Mancuso over potential mayoral candidates. These disputes are marked by public disagreements regarding party loyalty and past political affiliations.

In response to the growing distance between citizens and institutions, the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace has launched a socio-political training program for 2026-2027. The initiative, supported by prosecutor Annamaria Frustaci, aims to foster civic responsibility and human connection in the face of political instability.
