Cataract surgery: Financial considerations and medical timing

Medical professionals and financial experts are highlighting key considerations regarding cataract surgery and vision management for aging populations.

In Japan, patients are cautioned about the financial timing of cataract procedures. While the High-Cost Medical Expense Benefit system helps manage costs, there is a significant time lag of three to four months before reimbursements are issued. Furthermore, choosing multifocal lenses is classified as ‘selective medical care,’ meaning the price difference between standard and multifocal lenses is not covered by insurance and must be paid entirely out-of-pocket, potentially costing between 200,000 and 400,000 yen per eye.

In Taiwan, ophthalmologists are clarifying the distinction between presbyopia and cataracts. Dr. Weng Shao-wei notes that while presbyopia primarily affects near vision and can be corrected with glasses, cataracts involve the clouding of the eye's lens, affecting both near and distance vision. Modern minimally invasive ultrasound emulsification allows for surgery without waiting for the cataract to ‘ripen,’ with the timing of the procedure depending on how much the vision loss impacts daily activities and safety.
