Catarina Sobral wins National Illustration Prize

Illustrator Catarina Sobral has won the 30th edition of the National Illustration Prize for her work on the book ‘As pessoas são esquisitas’ (People are Weird), featuring text by Victor D. O. Santos and published by Orfeu Negro. The decision was made unanimously by the jury, as announced by the Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB).

The jury praised the work for its consistency, coherence, and the solid nature of the illustrations throughout the narrative. They specifically noted the sense of humor, character definition, and environmental representation, highlighting how the encounter between text and illustration creates multiple layers of meaning that enrich both the graphic and textual dimensions.

Special mentions were awarded to Catarina Alves for her illustrations in ‘Natália Correia: Entre o riso e a paixão’ and to Madalena Matoso for her work on ‘Fantasmas’. The competition included 61 works and 47 illustrators from 33 publishers.
