Catatumbo conflict intensifies amid Colombian military operations

Conflict in the Catatumbo region of Colombia continues to escalate despite government peace initiatives. Recent military actions, designated as ‘Operación Beta’, targeted rural areas in Tibú and San Calixto to corner the ELN. The operation reportedly resulted in the destruction of five bunkers and five camps, along with the seizure of weapons, explosives, and drones.

The region remains a site of intense dispute involving the ELN, FARC dissidents, and paramilitary groups. Tensions spiked following an attack by the FARC Front 33 against the ELN on January 25, 2025, which led to significant displacement and casualties. Civil associations, such as Ascamcat, have expressed concern regarding the impact of military bombings on local civilian populations.
