British Airways to overhaul A380 fleet with massive premium cabin upgrade

British Airways has announced a multi-billion-pound investment to completely overhaul the cabins of its 12 Airbus A380 aircraft. The retrofit program, which involves installing over 35,000 individual parts per plane, aims to shift the fleet's focus toward premium travel.

A central feature of the reconfiguration is the creation of what the airline describes as the world’s largest business class cabin. The entire upper deck will be dedicated to 106 Club Suite business class seats. To accommodate this and an expanded premium economy section, the airline will reduce total passenger capacity from 469 to 417 seats, primarily by removing 88 economy seats.

The new cabin layout includes 12 First Class suites, 106 Business Class seats, 84 Premium Economy seats, and 215 Economy seats. Beyond seating, the upgrade includes new entertainment screens, redesigned galleys, and refreshed interiors across all classes. The first refurbished A380 is expected to enter service in the coming months.

In addition to aircraft upgrades, British Airways is investing in its ground infrastructure at London Heathrow. Plans include a major lounge renewal at Terminal 5, featuring a new lounge in the C gates scheduled to open by late 2028, which will include a 17-meter bar and a dedicated Concorde Room.
