Catholic bishops distance themselves from Trump Oval Office prayer meeting

Several Catholic bishops have issued apologies and clarifications following a White House meeting with President Donald Trump that was used for political messaging. The gathering, which included approximately 12 clergymen, was intended to be a private discussion organized by the Heritage Foundation regarding issues such as immigration enforcement, religious worker visas, and human dignity.

Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee and Bishop William Joensen of Des Moines expressed regret, stating the meeting was “exploited” and “manipulated” for partisan purposes. They noted that while they were invited for private dialogue, the White House released video footage and photos of the bishops praying over the president without their consent. The footage was widely circulated on social media less than two weeks before the U.S. midterm elections.

Denver Archbishop James R. Golka, who led the prayer, also clarified that the event was not an endorsement of the president or the Republican Party. He emphasized that the Church’s practice of praying for national leaders is a long-standing tradition intended to seek blessings for the country, regardless of political agreement. The White House has not confirmed whether permission was obtained before the media was released.
