Catholic bishops critique Church direction and synodality

Catholic clergy are raising concerns regarding the current direction of the Church under Pope Leo XIV, focusing on the outcomes of the Synod on Synodality and doctrinal integrity.

Bishop Rob Mutsaerts of ’s-Hertogenbosch has issued an open letter to the Pope criticizing the Synod on Synodality. He questions whether the process has actually strengthened faith, increased Mass attendance, or produced more vocations. Mutsaerts warns that synodality risks becoming a permanent form of governance and argues that the Church should prioritize conversion, holiness, the Eucharist, and evangelization over dialogue-based structures.

In a separate statement, Bishop A. Schneider of Astana has addressed the tension between preserving Catholic faith and maintaining canonical recognition from the Pope. Following the episcopal consecrations by the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) against the Pope's will, Schneider frames the situation as a historical dilemma of doctrinal clarity versus institutional unity. He suggests that the FSSPX provides a service by insisting on liturgical and doctrinal rigor, arguing that addressing these ambiguities could signal an end to modernist projects within the Church.
