Catholic Cardinals address AI impact and religious milestones

Catholic leaders in South America are addressing the societal implications of artificial intelligence and upcoming religious milestones.

In Chile, Cardinal and Archbishop of Santiago Fernando Chomalí delivered a lecture at Universidad del Alba regarding humanity and the common good in the age of AI. He raised concerns about the distinction between accessing information and acquiring true knowledge. Chomalí cited a U.S. study suggesting that while students using AI may achieve better initial results, they often demonstrate lower long-term knowledge retention compared to those using traditional methods.

In Argentina, Cardinal Vicente Bokalic discussed the social challenges facing the Church, including the impact of AI and the need for empathy. He also highlighted efforts to invite Pope Leo XIV to visit Santiago del Estero, noting that such a visit requires coordination between various institutions and authorities.
