Catholic care associations discuss assisted suicide
Catholic care association professionals from the Dioceses of Speyer and Trier held a symposium in Speyer to address the complex issue of assisted suicide. The meeting focused on how legal guardians can support individuals in crisis, particularly those facing overlapping challenges such as illness, pain, poverty, and loneliness.
Following a 2020 Federal Constitutional Court ruling, assisted suicide is no longer punishable in Germany, though legislative updates are still pending. The discussion also addressed the guidelines ‘Den Weg des Lebens gehen’ (Walking the Path of Life), published in March 2026 by the German Bishops' Conference and the German Caritas Association, which outline the positions of Catholic-run institutions regarding these matters.
Robert Wessels of the Catholic Office in Berlin participated as a speaker, providing context on the legal developments and the stance of the Church and Caritas.
