Catholic Church calls for deeper security measures in Morelos
The Catholic Church in Morelos has characterized the Plan Cuautla as merely “a great attempt” at pacifying the eastern region of the state. Tomás Toral Nájera, vicar of the Diocese of Cuernavaca, expressed support for replicating this security strategy across all 36 municipalities in Morelos to bolster street safety.
Toral Nájera urged authorities to look beyond official crime statistics and consider the human suffering caused by homicides and disappearances. He noted that while official indicators provide data on criminal behavior, they often fail to capture the long-term impact on families and victims.
The Church also reported that some parishes in the Cuautla region have had to adjust mass schedules to protect parishioners from recent violence. Additionally, the vicar highlighted that insecurity is not limited to Cuautla, noting concerning conditions in Totolapan as well.
