Catholic Church celebrates National Catechist Day in Brazil

The Catholic Church in Brazil celebrated National Catechist Day on August 30, honoring the men and women dedicated to religious instruction and spiritual accompaniment.

In the Amazon region, including Pará and Amapá, catechists face unique challenges, often traveling long distances by river or difficult roads to reach indigenous, quilombola, and riverside communities. Their work involves integrating faith with local cultures and traditions while supporting various age groups through the sacraments of initiation.

Cardinal Orani João Tempesta noted that the role of the catechist has evolved significantly. Following Pope Francis’s 2021 Apostolic Letter ‘Antiquum Ministerium’, the ministry of catechists has been formally instituted. This requires ongoing formation through diocesan schools, culminating in the official reception of the ministry from local bishops. Catechists serve as essential community leaders, assisting priests in teaching the paths of faith from baptism through confirmation.
