Catholic Church commemorates Saints Margaret Mary Alacoque and Hedwig
October 16 marks the memorial of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and Saint Hedwig in the Catholic Church.
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690) was a French nun of the Visitation Order in Paray-le-Monial. She is recognized for her mystical experiences and visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which emphasized divine love, adoration, and reparation. Born in Burgundy, she entered the monastery in 1671 and reported significant apparitions beginning in late 1673.
Saint Hedwig, the Duchess of Silesia, is also commemorated. Born in Bavaria around 1174, she married Henry I the Bearded and became deeply involved in the administration of her husband's lands and the establishment of various monastic foundations, including Cistercian and Dominican orders. Following her husband's death in 1238, she lived at the Abbey of Trebnitz and was known for her charitable works. She was canonized in 1267 and is the patron saint of Silesia, Poland, and orphaned children.
