Catholic Church faces aging missionary workforce and shifting global demographics

The Catholic Church is facing significant demographic shifts as it marks the centenary of World Mission Sunday. While Spain remains a major missionary power with approximately 6,000 missionaries serving in Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania, the organization faces a critical aging crisis, with the average age of Spanish missionaries reaching 75 years.

Global data reveals a changing religious landscape. Africa has now slightly surpassed Europe in the number of baptized Catholics, with 288 million compared to Europe's 287 million. While the global number of priests has seen a slight increase to 407,421, the distribution is uneven; Europe is losing priests while Africa is seeing growth. To address the shortage of clergy in over 107,000 mission points, the Church is increasingly relying on a growing number of lay missionaries, which now exceeds 463,000.

Spain currently ranks as the second-largest economic contributor to global missions, following the United States. The Church continues to manage a vast global network, including over 230,000 schools and 70 million other institutions, to support its mission in 1,132 territories.
