Catholic Church in Mexico calls for shared environmental responsibility
The Catholic Church in Mexico has issued a call for shared responsibility in protecting the planet, emphasizing the need to examine how common spaces and people are treated. This appeal was made in observance of the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi and in reference to Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical, ‘Laudato Si’.
Through the Archdiocese of Mexico’s editorial in the weekly ‘Desde la Fe’, the Church promoted the concept of ‘integral ecology’. This principle asserts that environmental care is directly linked to social justice, noting that the consequences of environmental degradation do not affect everyone equally. Specifically, those with fewer resources often face greater risks from pollution, water shortages, and inadequate housing.
The Church outlined specific responsibilities for different sectors of society: families should review consumption and waste habits; communities should maintain public spaces like parks and streets; companies must consider the impact of their decisions; and authorities are urged to implement policies that protect the environment.
