Pope Leo XIV calls for protection of migrant and refugee children

Pope Leo XIV has issued an urgent appeal for the protection and care of migrant and refugee children ahead of the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 27, 2026. During his general audience, the Pontiff emphasized that minors are among the most vulnerable populations, often facing “unspeakable suffering,” including violence, torture, and exploitation along migration routes.

Under the theme “Even Just One of These Children,” the Pope called on all individuals, communities, and institutions to take responsibility for the dignity and safety of displaced youth. He noted that many children lose their lives during transit and urged public and private entities to place the protection of these minors at the center of their efforts.

Global data highlights the scale of the issue, with reports noting that in 2025, over 35,000 minors arrived in Europe out of a total of 155,000 migrants. The Church’s annual observance aims to raise awareness regarding the plight of displaced persons and promote initiatives for their integration and accompaniment.
