Catholic Church opposes Argentine government budget cuts to disability services
The Catholic Church has expressed significant concern regarding proposed government austerity measures affecting the disability sector in Argentina. During meetings with various congressional blocs, representatives from the Episcopate's Social Pastoral warned that pursuing a fiscal surplus should not result in “human bankruptcy.”
Church leaders are advocating for the extension of the current emergency law for disability services to ensure continued funding and legal protections for families. Tensions arose during discussions with members of the La Libertad Avanza party and its allies regarding whether the government's legislative proposals truly address the needs of the sector or merely mask continued budget reductions.
In Misiones, Bishop Juan Rubén Martínez also called on national deputies to prioritize the common good over partisan interests, arguing that reducing state assistance to vulnerable populations undermines human dignity. The Church's intervention comes ahead of a potential visit by the Pope to Argentina.
