Catholic Church perspectives on marriage annulment and sacramental access

The Catholic Church maintains that while formal divorce does not exist within its doctrine, the Church can grant marriage annulments. Under the Code of Canon Law, an ecclesiastical tribunal may declare a marriage null if specific grounds such as infidelity, aggression, or emotional immaturity are proven. Reforms introduced by Pope Francis in 2015 aimed to make this process more agile and brief, allowing individuals to marry within the Church and receive the Eucharist once a nullity is established.

In a separate reflection regarding pastoral care, Bishop Erik Varden of the Diocese of Trondheim highlighted the situation of divorced and remarried Catholics. Speaking in the context of the apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’, Varden praised the faithfulness of those who continue to attend Mass despite being unable to receive Holy Communion. He described these individuals as examples of spiritual perseverance who seek God's mercy while navigating irregular marital situations.
