Catholic Church reports global growth in faithful and clergy

The latest Statistical Yearbook of the Church indicates that the global Catholic population has reached 1,422,144,000, an increase of 16,690,000 from the previous year. This represents 17.8% of the world's population. While the Americas host the highest number of baptisms, Africa shows the most significant dynamism, recording nearly 7.6 million new Catholics and surpassing Europe in total number of faithful.

For the first time in five years, the total number of priests worldwide has seen a slight increase, rising by 425 to a total of 407,421. This growth was driven by increases in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, which offset declines in Europe and Oceania. Specifically, Africa recorded 1,676 new priests, Asia added 1,065, and the Americas saw an increase of 199.

Despite the rise in active priests, the report notes challenges in religious vocations. The number of nuns has fallen by 9,292 to 580,131, with Africa being the only continent to report an increase. Additionally, the number of seminarians has decreased by approximately 2,900, falling to 103,604, signaling ongoing challenges for future clerical formation.
